Cybersecurity Myth Busters: 6 Things Small Businesses Still Get Wrong

Cybersecurity Myth Busters: 6 Things Small Businesses Still Get Wrong

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which makes it a pretty good time to ask a slightly uncomfortable question: How much of what you believe about cybersecurity is actually true?

There’s a lot of cybersecurity advice floating around out there. Some of it is useful. Some of it is outdated. And some of it has been repeated so many times that nobody remembers to question it anymore. That can become a problem. Because when a business assumes it’s protected, it may stop looking for the gaps. So let's bust a few.

Myth #1: “We’re too small for hackers to care about.”

We hear this one a lot. The reality? Cybercriminals aren't necessarily looking for the biggest company. They're looking for an opportunity.

A small business may have access to valuable financial information, customer data, employee credentials, or systems connected to other businesses.

The myth: Hackers only target big companies.

The reality: Attackers can target businesses of any size when they find an opportunity.

Myth #2: “Our employees can spot phishing emails.”

Maybe they can. But modern phishing emails aren't always the obvious disasters they used to be. AI can help attackers create polished, personalized messages that sound like they're coming from someone your employees actually know.

Instead of asking, “Does this email look weird?”, employees need to ask:

  • Is this request unusual?
  • Did someone suddenly change payment instructions?
  • Is the sender asking for sensitive information?
  • Am I being pushed to click a new login link?

When something doesn't feel right, verify before you act.

Myth #3: “We have MFA, so we're covered.”

WE. LOVE. MFA. But MFA isn't a magical force field.

Attackers can use tactics such as MFA fatigue or “prompt bombing,” sending repeated authentication requests and hoping someone eventually approves one just to make the notifications stop.

MFA should absolutely be part of your security strategy. It just shouldn't be the entire strategy.

Myth #4: “Our backups have us covered.”

Here's the uncomfortable question: If ransomware hit tomorrow, could you actually restore your business?

Having a backup and being able to recover from a backup are two different things. An untested backup is a little like having a spare tire you’ve never checked. Technically, it's there. Whether it works when you need it? That's another story.

Your backup isn't the plan. Your ability to recover is the plan.

Myth #5: “Cybersecurity is IT's responsibility.”

IT plays a huge role in protecting your business. But IT can't control every click.

Your employees interact with email, websites, files, vendors, payment requests and cloud applications every day. That means cybersecurity decisions happen throughout your organization—not just in the IT department.

Security awareness training helps employees understand what to look for, when to stop and when to ask for help.

Cybersecurity isn't an IT problem. It's a business responsibility.

Myth #6: “We know what we'd do if something happened.”

Okay, picture this: It's Tuesday morning. Several employees suddenly can't access their files.

Who's calling IT?

Who contacts your cyber insurance company?

What should employees do with their computers?

How do you communicate if your normal systems are down?

Who talks to customers?

If nobody knows the answers, you're not going to want to figure them out during the incident. An incident response plan exists for exactly this reason.

Stop confusing “we have security” with “we're secure.”

Cybersecurity isn't about buying one more tool and calling it a day. It's about understanding what you're protecting, where your gaps are and whether the protections you have are actually doing their jobs.

That's where TechnologyEdge comes in. We can help you take a clearer look at your cybersecurity posture, identify gaps and build a practical plan that fits your business.
