April 1st comes and goes.
The fake product announcements disappear.
The harmless office pranks wind down.
And everyone stops second-guessing every email they receive.
Unfortunately, cybercriminals don’t follow the same calendar.
In fact, spring tends to be one of the busiest seasons for hackers and scammers.
Not because employees are careless — but because everyone is busy.
Teams are moving fast.
People are juggling meetings.
And when things feel routine, that’s exactly when scams slip through unnoticed.
Cybercriminals rely on messages that look almost believable — the kind that blend right into a normal workday.
Here are three scams targeting businesses right now.
As you read them, ask yourself one simple question:
Would everyone on your team recognize these before clicking?
Scam #1: The Toll Road Text Message
An employee receives a text:
“You have an unpaid toll balance of $6.99. Pay within 12 hours to avoid late fees.”
The message looks legitimate.
It mentions a real toll system — E-ZPass, SunPass, FasTrak — whichever sounds most believable.
The amount is small enough not to raise alarms.
So someone taps the link, pays quickly, and moves on with their day.
Except the website isn’t real.
According to the FBI, more than 60,000 complaints about fake toll texts were filed in 2024, and the volume jumped dramatically in 2025. Cybercriminals have created tens of thousands of fake domains designed to mimic toll payment systems.
And here’s the kicker:
Some of these messages have even reached people in states without toll roads at all.
Why does it work?
Because a $6 charge feels harmless — and most people have recently parked downtown, driven through a toll, or traveled somewhere.
The best defense:
Never pay fees through text message links. If the charge might be legitimate, go directly to the official website yourself.
Convenience is the bait.
Process is the defense.
Scam #2: “Your File Is Ready”
This one blends perfectly into everyday business operations.
An employee receives an email saying a document was shared with them.
It might appear to come from:
- Microsoft OneDrive
- Google Drive
- DocuSign
- Dropbox
The formatting looks real.
The sender name looks familiar.
The employee clicks the link and logs in.
But instead of accessing a document…
They’ve just handed over their login credentials.
Cybercriminals now have access to your company’s cloud environment.
And these attacks are growing fast.
Phishing campaigns abusing trusted platforms like Google Drive, Microsoft, and Salesforce increased 67% in 2025, according to security researchers.
Employees are also seven times more likely to click malicious links from services like OneDrive or SharePoint because they look identical to legitimate notifications.
The smarter attackers don’t even send fake emails anymore.
They compromise a real account and use the platform’s actual file-sharing system.
Which means the notification comes from a legitimate server.
Your spam filter sees nothing wrong.
The best defense:
If you weren’t expecting a shared file, log into the platform directly instead of clicking the link in the email.
If the document is real, it will still be there.
Scam #3: The AI-Written Email That Looks Perfect
Remember when phishing emails were easy to spot?
They had terrible grammar.
Weird formatting.
Obvious nonsense.
Those days are over.
AI is now helping cybercriminals write extremely convincing phishing emails.
A 2025 study found that AI-generated phishing emails achieved a 54% click rate, compared to just 12% for human-written scams.
That’s more than four times more effective.
These emails look completely legitimate.
They reference:
- real company names
- real employees
- real workflows
All pulled from LinkedIn profiles and company websites.
Even worse, many attacks now target specific departments.
Your finance team might receive a message about updating vendor payment details.
Your HR manager might receive an employee verification request.
In one test, 72% of employees engaged with a vendor impersonation email.
These messages aren’t dramatic or threatening.
They’re calm.
Professional.
And just urgent enough to make someone act quickly.
The Real Problem Isn’t Employees
Most cybersecurity incidents aren’t caused by careless people.
They’re caused by systems that rely on perfect human judgment.
All it takes is one rushed click on a busy afternoon.
That’s why modern cybersecurity strategies focus on protection layers, not just employee awareness.
Strong cybersecurity should include:
- email threat filtering
- advanced phishing protection
- multi-factor authentication
- employee security awareness training
- network monitoring
Because if a single mistake can derail your day, your security system needs a safety net.
